Teenage
Kicks - a focus day for children's professionals to discuss the
issues raised by the Reading Agency's report "Fulfilling their
Potential" a critical strand of The Framework for the Future
action plans.
The
day was held at the Penguin Offices in London in conjunction with
Penguin and Random House. Some 100 delegates from 25 authorities
were in attendance and speakers included Jacqueline Wilson, Grace
Dent, Bali Rai, Sam Llewellyn, Philippa Dickinson, Moira Arthur
and Miranda McKearney.

The
key note address from Miranda - Director of the Reading Agency - explored
and developed the agency's own report "Fullfilling the Potential",
with breakout sessions following where each group was asked to suggest
6 ideas for involving young people in their chosen topic.
It was suggested that we publish the results of these breakout sessions

1 - Reading Groups |
| |
1. Consider the Venue :
Hold
an author event in a bar for older teenagers.
This
will involve non-participants too.
2. Train all staff not just YP team to work with teenagers and read
the literature.
3. Involve young people in the organisation. Use the Youth Cabinet,
email, text them.
4. Work in partnership with schools, youth service, publishers and
other authorities.
5. Keep the reading activities varied and interesting.
6. Provide food and drink! |

2 - Book Selection |
| |
1. "You Choose" Selection boxes in non-library venues.
2. Reverse selection. Invite teenagers to weed out the dross.
3. Take young people bookbuying. Trust them with a budget.
4. Support the choice of non-book material CDs, Audiotapes and Graphic
novels.
5. Offer rewards if an item selected by the young people is borrowed
(free CD loan etc).
6. Offer on-going, informal opportunities to review and select. |

3 - Library Design |
| |
1.
Establish a youth panel in every authority and work towards youth
panels linked to every library.
2. Use young people to reach young people-peer consultation. Offer
them training and incentives to take part.
3. Establish consultation as important at the beginning of the design
process.
4. Give young people proper ownership of the project from the beginning.
5. Inter Agency Work eg Youth Service, TRA. Train young people to
deal with the public.
6. Set parameters and Time Scales for the consultation. |
