Julia Golding, a former UN campaigner and ex-diplomat has won this year's Nestlé Children's Book Award for her debut novel 'The Diamond of Drury Lane'. The Nestle Children's Book Award is now in its 22nd year celebrates the best in children's books - as voted for by children themselves!
Chair of the judging panel, journalist Julia Eccleshare commented: “The Diamond of Drury Lane is a stunning first novel, full of colour, pace and atmosphere and Julia Golding is to be congratulated on her achievement.”
“The Nestlé Children’s Book Prize is the perfect barometer of the health of the children’s book industry. Judging by the calibre of the 2006 winners, children’s literature has never been in better shape,” she said. The announcement was made December 13th, at the British Library, London, in front of an invited audience of some of the schoolchildren who were this year’s judges.
The Nestlé Children’s Book Prize is the UK’s longest-running children’s book prize and has helped launch the career of many of today's top children’s writers, including JK Rowling and Jacqueline Wilson.
