The Carnegie Medal is given for an outstanding book for children and contenders are appraised for characterisation, plot, style, accuracy, imaginative quality and that indefinable element that lifts the book above the others. (NB The date of this award is based on the year in which the books were published, not in which the award is announced e.g. the 1992 award was announced in June 1993).

Announced in July each year on the basis of nominations from CILIP members to members of the Library Association’s Youth Libraries Group - entries are not required.
