Awarded to the best work of fiction published in the year preceding the year of the award. There are three category winners: Books for Younger Children (previously 'picture book'); Books for Younger Readers (previously 'shorter novel'); and Books for Older Reader (previously 'longer novel'), and an overall winner.
The winner is chosen by nominations from children throughout the UK - entries are not required.
The winner receives a trophy for the year and a silver acorn to keep. Each category winner receives a silver bowl and every shortlisted author receives a portfolio of children’s work.
