tBk Talkback :

Narinda Dhami tells us how legend inspired The Barber’s Clever Wife.

What inspired you to write this book?

It’s based on a legend from the Punjab region in India, which is where my dad came from. The publisher approached me to write an Indian story based on an old myth or legend or folktale, so I went on the internet and found this myth and thought it would work really well.

What appealed to you about the story?

I liked the strong character of the Barber’s wife, the fact that a woman was the central character, which is often not the case in folktales. I also liked the fact there could be a lot of humour in the story.

Was it an easy book to write?

Well, the basic story was already there, I then reworked the legend for a modern audience, adding dialogue and some extra bits of humour. The story was really enjoyable to write and quite satisfying the way it works out in the end.

You’ve also written the Bindi Babes series, what made you decide to write about Indian subject matter?

I’ve been writing for about twelve years and a few years ago I decided I wanted to draw on my Indian background and heritage. Nowadays, you can assume a certain level of knowledge of Indian cultures, which makes writing about Indian issues much easier because you don’t have to keep explaining words or have a glossary.

How do you get your ideas?

Sometimes they just pop into your head, other times it’s based on something you’ve seen or read. Sometimes, even a film you’ve watched can spark off an idea. Ideas are the hardest bit for me so when I do get one that I think is good, I pounce on it. For me the actual plotting and writing is the easiest part.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just finished the editing of Bangra Babes, which is the third in the Bindi, Bollywood Babes series. I am now just starting to plan a new book which will be about a new character. So watch this space.
