This award began in 2000 and is in memory of two very important figures in the children’s book world, both of whom died of cancer in 1999. Henrietta Branford was a talented, award-winning children’s novelist, and Wendy Boase, a passionate children’s book editor who was the editiorial director of Walker Books, as well as being one of its founders.
The award is supported by several publishers, headed by Walker Books. Awarded to an outstanding first-time novel for children, this annual prize is presented in June/July. The winner receives £1,000. The editor of the winning book also receives recognition for encouraging new talent.
