Initially sponsored by Sainsbury's to complement its £6m Bookstart scheme, the Sainsbury's Baby Book Award was for the best book for a baby under one year old. The Bookstart project aims to supply every parent of a 7-9 month old baby in the UK with a free pack containing baby books, advice and information.

Booktrust, which coordinates Bookstart, found it was difficult to identify the best books for babies under one year of age. The answer, Book Trust felt, was to organise a competition with the aim of increasing public and publisher awareness of the importance of that first book. Over and above identifying the very best book for babies, the competition will also highlight (at shortlist stage) six of the nation's best baby books.

Award amount is £2,000 and a trophy to the author, along with an award of a trophy and certificate to the publisher.

From 2004, the award was been replaced by the Early Years Award, which continues to be administred by Booktrust.
